Meet our highly trained staff

Derek J. Copeland

BVSc  MRCVS Partner

Having qualified from Liverpool University in 1985 I went into a mixed job in Northumberland After a few years I realised my interests lay in surgery so moved on to purely small animal practice.

I worked for several years in a referral practice in Northumberland where I gathered an enormous amount of experience not just in orthopaedics but how to practice Veterinary medicine at the highest level.

Penny and I started Copeland Vet Surgeons in 1999 to provide what we hope is a practice of high quality and high standards plus a strong caring ethos.

Surgery is still my main interest particularly orthopaedic surgery including cruciate repairs. I try as hard as possible to keep up with new techniques such as TTA cruciate repairs which I believe is a huge advance.

Outside work like Penny I try and split myself into too many pieces getting enough time with our three kids -even if they don’t appreciate it-, going to the gym, taking the dog out and getting out in my kayak.

If nothing else I try hard!

Penny A. Copeland

BVSc MRCVS Partner

I qualified from Bristol University in 1984. I then took up a farm animal house job in Liverpool University Veterinary School where I trained final year student’s practical skills. Derek was one of the students I trained to rectal cows!

After several years in large animal practice I moved into small animal work with the start of a family. We have Katherine (1990) Angus (1994) and Finlay (1998).

Derek and I started Copeland Veterinary Surgeons together in October 1999. This is our ‘fourth child’

Family and work make for a very busy life. I love travelling, battle to keep reasonably fit and I am always looking for some “me time”!

Sian Statham

I qualified from Cambridge University Veterinary school in 1996 I worked in mixed practice in North Yorkshire for 7 years before joining Copeland Veterinary Surgeons part time in 2004.

I am married to Jonathon who is a farm vet in Ripon. We have 2 children, Katy and Ben. Also at home are our two cats, Vic and Bob and our crazy cocker spaniel called Millie.

Jean Bain

I graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2012 and then went travelling to Australia New Zealand and South East Asia before starting work.

I am from the North of Scotland and worked in mixed practice on the Isle of Lewis in the outer Hebrides before moving to Copeland Veterinary Surgeons. At home I have 2 cats who also moved with me from the Isle of Lewis

Helen Squires

I qualified from the University of Liverpool with distinction, before that I qualified with BSc (Hons) in zoology with marine zoology from the University of Wales, Bangor. Between the two degrees I spent two years travelling around Australia and south-east Asia. Whilst travelling I rescued my dog Inca from a bin and she is now back in England with me! I also have two cats, Emmie and Hamish, a snake and some fish.

Before moving to Copelands I worked in a busy small animal hospital in Essex, but have relocated to the beautiful north-east as my partner was born here.

Outside of work I enjoy keeping fit, photography and exploring new places.

Scott Linnett

Scott, having previously worked in Middlesbrough, settled again on Teesside when joining the Copelands team in June 2016. Scott returned from his home city of Portsmouth where he had worked at an independent veterinary practice developing his medical skills in particular. Appreciating the place that pets hold in the lives of owners and their families, Scott really enjoys consulting - seeking to sustain the health and wellbeing of his patients. Away from veterinary practice Scott enjoys time with family, and going to concerts and the cricket - these days, apparently, he watches rather better than he plays..
