Anniversary Group Shot of Copeland Vets

It was our practice's 18th anniversary in October. Rather appropriately the stone for this is a Cat’s eye Gem stone, but I guess cake will have to suffice, lovingly made by Penny and Derek!
Thank you to all our staff and clients for making the practice such a success and great place to work.

When we were recently asked by TIBS to support the local football teams of Thornaby and Ingleby Barwick, Penny and Derek were happy to oblige.

Grassroots sports are very important to Penny and Derek so being able to help support local children to get involved in sporting activities is something we are thrilled to be a part of.

We would like to wish all the teams of TIBS ”good luck” for the season.

Disneyland Marathon Runner!

Helen's Disneyland Marathon

Helen Squires, one of our Vets has recently been running around the magic kingdom dressed as a mouse!!

"I have just completed my first half marathon, having not even been running for a year. I ran the inaugural Disneyland Paris half marathon, dressed as Minnie Mouse.
The experience was amazing, and all of the hard training certainly was worth it.

I have been raising money for a fantastic charity, Dogs for Good (previously Dogs for the Disabled). I initially chose this charity as they train 'balance dogs' for people with Multiple Sclerosis, which has affected multiple people in my family.
Dogs for Good provide assistance dogs to support both adults and children with a range of physical disabilities and mental disorders, giving them greater independence and confidence.
It is amazing that dogs can make such a difference to a people's lives.

If you would like to know more about this great charity please take a look at my Just Giving page (
I am still fundraising, and all donations would be very greatly received. You can donate via the Just Giving website, or you can donate £5 by texting 'HELN84 £5' to 70070 or, of course, you can donate at reception.

Thank you very much for your support."

Penny's Aspire Swim Challenge

Penny is taking on the Aspire Channel Swim 2016, swimming the distance of the Channel over 12 weeks to raise money for Aspire. Every eight hours someone is paralysed by a Spinal Cord Injury and Aspire provides the essential equipment, advice, housing and grants that spinal cord injured people need to live their lives independently.

"I used to swim once a week and do 20 lengths of the pool. Now I need to go 3 times a week and do 40 each time! My son Finlay has helpfully suggested I step up from this in case I am ill at any time! Well let me get going first Finlay!!

This is a big challenge, but the more I raise, the more of a difference I'll make!"

Tricia's Great North Run for Zoe's Place

Amy Graduates

Like us many of you will have enjoyed watching the proceedings at this year’s Great North Run. This year however Head Receptionist Tricia Petters decided that she wanted to raise money for the unbelievably worthwhile charity “Zoe’s Place”.

Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice is based in Middlesbrough; the hospice offers palliative, respite and end of life care to babies and infants with life limiting and life threatening conditions. The support and on-going care is provided to families completely free of charge. Zoe’s Place relies heavily on fund raising donations.

So with grit and determination to help, Tricia and her partner Chris entered the great North Run. The two were soon to become four when Tricia’s brother and his partner joined the team. It came as no surprise to us that Tricia achieved her goal, completing the run and raising £1,288.00.

For the enthusiasts among you Tricia completed the run in a very respectable 2 hours and 17 minutes. Tricia was bright eyed and walking without the aid of a frame when she arrived at work Monday morning, amazing! Well done Tricia.

Important Notice for All Dog Owners

The Government has announced that all dogs must be micro chipped by April 6th 2016

We believe that the introduction of compulsory micro chipping is an important step forward for dog welfare and will help to reduce the number of dogs destroyed in kennels.

Therefore we will be supporting the Dogs Trust Campaign to help ensure compliance is as high as possible by the time the law change comes into effect.

The Dogs Trust Campaign aims to microchip as many dogs as possible free of charge. The campaign will run from April 2014 to March 2015 and we are delighted to be a part of this very worthwhile scheme.

  • The scheme starts from 1st April 2014 until 31st March 2015

  • The campaign is available to all dogs, even if your dog is not a patient at the practice

  • We will microchip your dog completely free of charge on behalf of the Dogs Trust

  • We will register your details onto a national data base and a certificate of registration for your pet will be sent directly to you

  • If you would like to take part in the scheme all we ask is that you call into the practice Monday to Friday between 2pm and 3pm and a nurse will be happy to microchip you dog.

  • No appointment is necessary.

News - 25th October 2013

Canine Lungworm is caused by a parasite called Angiostrongylus vasorum.

It was first reported in Wales and southern England in the early 1980’s but has been spreading north in dogs and foxes ever since. Fortunately numbers of confirmed cases in our area are still very few.

This parasite is carried in slugs and snails (intermediate hosts).

Dogs of any age can be affected if they eat slugs or snails, however infection is most common in young dogs that are more inquisitive.

Around 4 weeks after a dog eats an infected slug/snail, larvae can be detected in faeces.

Without treatment the worms cause inflammatory and fibrous changes in your pets lungs, as well as potentially affecting that pets blood clotting ability.

Symptoms are very non-specific and include gradual onset of coughing, breathlessness and exercise intolerance.

PREVIOUSLY we could only diagnose Lungworm in samples of mucus from the airways (requiring anaesthesia), or in faeces samples (unreliable).

NOW we have a simple new blood test that allows us to rapidly confirm when your pet is suffering from active lungworm infection.

This allows us to provide your pet with prompt treatment with appropriate worming products and supportive therapy.

The test costs £21.60 per pet.

Feel free to contact the practice for a nurse appointment if you would like your pet to be blood tested. A vet or nurse will contact you (usually within 24hrs) with your results and treatment plan if necessary.

A fond farewell to Colette as she heads down under

Head Nurse Colette Connell joined the practice in October 1999. Colette was the first nurse Penny and Derek employed when the practice opened. Since then Colette has seen and aided the development of the practice into a valued service to the community.

Her warm bubbly personality gained her the trust and friendship of many clients. To her colleagues Colette was a part of the fabric of the practice, her laughter was forever present. But when hubby Ben was offered the opportunity of a life time, to relocate his family to Australia we were all delighted for them, this really was an opportunity not to be missed.

So we bid Colette, Ben, daughter Polly and son Tom a safe journey to Australia. We send with them our warmest wishes of success and happiness for the future.

Protect your Pets with our Summer Campaign

Welcome to our summer campaign.  Summer is just about here, and it’s the time of year when pets love to adventure.  Climbing trees, exploring in the garden, running in the park are a few favourite pastimes.  The problem is, as the temperature rises, so does the risk of fleas and ticks.  So while pets are having fun in the great outdoors, they’re at risk of picking up these parasites.

Our summer campaign is here to help you protect your pets throughout the summer.  It’s very simple when you buy a pack of 3 Frontline Combo in July or August we will give you 1 pipette free.  Just ask the reception team for details.

The cycling (4.5 miles each way) each day was a new experience to Penny using Kate's bike! No prospect of medals here but plenty of encouragement from Derek and Finlay!I somehow we don't think the legacy of these games will be Penny becoming a cyclist!I
